A Covid Project

This bathroom was one of my largest solo undertakings. When Covid hit, I was jobless, and my cousin needed their master bathroom remodeled. This was the perfect opportunity to throw myself into the deep end. From design to demo, all the way to a finished product; this bathroom remodel is one of my favorite projects I’ve ever completed, and something I’m very proud of.

Before and After

Demo

The challenging part about this demo was the wet bed that the tile walls, floor, and shower were made of. It’s basically wire mesh hammered right into the studs, with mortar sprayed onto it, and the tile is layed right on to the mortar. The demo alone took me a week of moving 75lb trash cans down the stairs one at a time. You can also note there was dead space to the left of the shower and above it. blowing out those walls allowed for a much more open and brighter shower. Moving from a closet to an open shelf style reduced the need for an interior door and also helped to open up this smaller bathroom.

Construction

Now the fun part begins. Once the demo was completed, I was able to get into updating the plumbing and some of the electrical work, repairing many things that were not code; such as electrical wires being terminated inside the walls but not in an approved electrical box. all new subfloor and sheetrock was installed, and traditional cement board was used for the shower, with a waterproof membrane applied directly to the surface.

The shower was an unusual size, so a custom shower pan had to be created. This meant making sure the correct slope was created to allow for proper drainage.
